Description
WW2 German Eastern Front Medal (Ostmedaille) – Unmarked Ring This is an original example of the Winterschlacht im Osten 1941/42 Medal, commonly known as the Eastern Front Medal or Ostmedaille, awarded to German and Axis personnel who endured the brutal conditions of the first winter campaign on the Eastern Front during Operation Barbarossa. Instituted on May 26, 1942, the medal recognized both combatants and non-combatants who served in the Soviet Union between November 15, 1941, and April 15, 1942, provided they spent at least 14 days in combat or 60 days in a non-combat role, or were wounded or frostbitten during that period. The reverse of the medal bears the stark inscription “Winterschlacht Im Osten 1941/42” (Winter Battle in the East), along with a sword crossed with a laurel branch, symbolizing both struggle and sacrifice. The obverse features the Wehrmacht eagle clutching a swastika, set above a helmet and grenade, evoking the harsh combat conditions faced during the campaign. The award was colloquially referred to by soldiers as the “Frozen Meat Medal” (Gefrierfleischorden) due to the extreme cold endured. The medal was struck from a zinc alloy with a chemically darkened finish, and suspended from a ribbon featuring the red, white, and black national colors—symbolizing blood, snow, and mourning. This particular example is unmarked, with no visible maker code on the suspension ring, a trait consistent with numerous wartime-issued variants. The Eastern Front Medal remains one of the most widely distributed German decorations of the Second World War, with over 3 million awarded. It serves as a grim testament to the disastrous conditions and heavy losses suffered by Axis forces during the initial invasion of the Soviet Union.
