WW2 Italo-German Campaign Medal for North Africa – Afrika-Italienisch-Deutscher Feldzug 1941–1943 This is an original example of the Italo-German Campaign Medal for North Africa, known in German as Medaille für den Italienisch-Deutschen Feldzug in Afrika and in Italian as Medaglia Italo-Tedesca per la Campagna in Africa. Instituted by the Kingdom of Italy on March 6, 1942, this bronze medal was awarded to both Italian and German troops who served together in North Africa between 1941 and 1943. It was issued to recognize participation in the joint Axis campaigns under commanders such as Field Marshal Erwin Rommel and Italian leaders of the Regio Esercito. The obverse of the medal features a stylized monument adorned with both the Italian Fasces and the German swastika, symbolizing the alliance between the two nations. Surrounding the design is the inscription Italienisch-Deutscher Feldzug in Afrika in both languages. The reverse depicts two armored warriors—representing Italy and Germany—struggling against a three-headed Hydra, a powerful image symbolizing the Allied forces opposing them.
