Description
The Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry (DCLI), an historic regiment of the British Army, played a significant role in World War II. Raised in 1881, the regiment’s origins trace back to the 46th and 32nd Regiments of Foot. By the time of the Second World War, the DCLI had expanded to multiple battalions, which saw service in various theaters across Europe and the Mediterranean. During the war, the 1st Battalion DCLI was part of the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) and was deployed to France in 1939. After intense fighting during the German invasion of France in 1940, the battalion was evacuated from Dunkirk. Following its reconstitution, the 1st Battalion went on to serve in North Africa, where it participated in the final phase of the Tunisian Campaign, contributing to the Allied victory in May 1943. The battalion then took part in the Italian Campaign, landing at Salerno in September 1943 as part of 10th Infantry Brigade, 4th Infantry Division. It fought in heavy mountain warfare up the Italian peninsula, including at Monte Cassino, one of the most grueling battles of the campaign. The 1st DCLI continued to serve in Italy through 1944 and into early 1945, playing a part in the eventual Allied advance toward northern Italy. The 2nd Battalion DCLI served in a training and home defense capacity during most of the war, but many of its personnel were drafted into other units for overseas service. Several Territorial Army and hostilities-only battalions, such as the 5th and 7th Battalions, were raised as part of the regiment's wartime expansion. The 5th Battalion, for example, served in North-West Europe, landing in Normandy shortly after D-Day in June 1944. As part of the 43rd (Wessex) Division, it saw fierce combat in Operation Epsom, the Battle of the Falaise Pocket, and the crossing of the Rhine, pushing into Germany by war’s end. The regiment earned numerous battle honors in World War II and maintained a strong reputation for discipline and effectiveness in light infantry roles, particularly in complex terrain. Its soldiers upheld the DCLI’s legacy of rapid mobility, marksmanship, and initiative—hallmarks of the light infantry tradition. After the war, the DCLI would continue to serve until its 1959 amalgamation with the Somerset Light Infantry, forming the Somerset and Cornwall Light Infantry, and eventually becoming part of The Rifles in modern times.
