Description
WW2 German M1934 Tornister Backpack with RZM Stamp and Original Shoulder Straps

This original M1934 German Tornister is a classic and evocative piece of early World War II field gear, worn on the march by thousands of German soldiers during the rapid campaigns of 1939–1941. Often nicknamed the "Affe" or "monkey" pack due to its shape and how it sat on the back, the Tornister was standard issue to Wehrmacht infantry and was used to carry a soldier’s essential items—rations, a spare shirt, personal effects, and sometimes even a rolled blanket or shelter half strapped across the top.

This example features its original canvas body with leather-reinforced seams and cowhide-covered exterior flap—an iconic detail that linked it visually to older 19th-century military kit. The four rear leather attachment loops remain firmly stitched in place, and both of the original issue leather shoulder straps are present, a rarity since these were often removed or lost during or after wartime use. The interior is fully intact with the tie cords and inner compartments well-preserved.

Most notably, this pack bears a faint but identifiable RZM (Reichszeugmeisterei) stamp, indicating it was manufactured under the strict control of the National Socialist regime’s centralized procurement system. While most Tornisters were made for the regular army, those marked with the RZM logo were produced for political or paramilitary units such as the SA or Hitler Youth—but often saw crossover use, particularly in the early war years when equipment shortages blurred the lines between party and military supply chains.

This design was gradually replaced later in the war by simpler rucksacks like the M1939 or M1944 models, making this early war Tornister an important artifact of Germany’s initial mobilization and early campaigns in Poland, France, and the Low Countries. Carried across vast distances on foot, in bitter cold or summer heat, these backpacks were part of the personal burden every soldier bore—literally and symbolically—as they advanced under the banners of a regime that would soon plunge the world into total war.

A complete, correct, and honest example with unmistakable character, this M1934 Tornister tells the story of the German soldier at the start of the war—disciplined, well-equipped, and on the move.
