This is an original World War II-era Italian campaign medal awarded to participants in the 1939 Italian expedition to Albania, a precursor to Italy’s broader involvement in the Second World War. Instituted shortly after the April 1939 invasion, the medal was awarded to Italian military personnel who took part in the rapid occupation and annexation of the Kingdom of Albania under Mussolini’s fascist regime.

Struck in bronze, the medal features a powerful allegorical design: the helmeted head of a Roman warrior—symbolizing Italian martial legacy—superimposed over a double-headed Albanian eagle, with the word “ALBANIA” boldly inscribed above. The reverse bears a Roman fasces and laurel wreath, classical emblems of authority and victory, and the inscription “XXVIII OTTOBRE MCMXXII – IV APRILE MCMXXXIX,” referencing both the founding of the fascist regime (October 28, 1922) and the date of the invasion (April 4, 1939).

This example retains its original ribbon with the characteristic Italian tricolor and black edge stripes, representing fascist Italy. The ribbon is in very good condition with minor signs of age, and the bronze planchet shows pleasing patina without damage or cleaning.

The Albania campaign marked one of Italy’s first aggressive moves under Mussolini’s imperialist ambitions, setting the stage for its later invasions in Greece and North Africa. Though militarily unopposed, the occupation had long-term consequences for the Balkans and entangled Italy in a series of costly campaigns throughout the region.
