This original Italian Libya Campaign Medal was issued to commemorate service in the Kingdom of Italy’s North African holdings during the early 20th century, particularly in the Libyan territories. Struck in silvered bronze, this example features the bust of King Vittorio Emanuele III on the obverse, with the legend VITTORIO • EMANUELE • III • RE • D’ITALIA encircling the profile. The reverse is simply inscribed LIBIA within a laurel wreath. It is suspended from the correct bicolored ribbon of alternating blue and red stripes, which remains in very good condition without any additional clasps or devices.

While the medal itself was first established in 1913 to recognize Italian troops who participated in the Italo-Turkish War (1911–1912) and subsequent campaigns in Libya, this particular example is from the WW2 era. During World War II, Libya was a major theater of operations in the North African Campaign, where Axis and Allied forces clashed over strategic control of the Mediterranean and the Suez Canal. Italian troops fought alongside German Afrika Korps under Field Marshal Erwin Rommel in battles stretching from Tobruk to El Alamein. Although this medal predates the major engagements of WWII, it was still issued to veterans and personnel serving in the colony, symbolizing Italy’s colonial ambitions and ongoing military presence in North Africa.

The medal represents both the imperial aspirations of Mussolini’s Fascist regime and the long-standing struggle to maintain Italian control in a region of persistent resistance and global strategic importance. For collectors, it is a poignant artifact from one of the most bitterly contested and logistically complex campaigns of the Second World War.

Condition is very good with moderate patina to the metal surface and crisp detail. Ribbon is original and intact, showing only minor fraying at the folds. A fine and evocative piece of WWII militaria tied to the North African front.
