Description
The United States Buffalo Nickel, officially known as the Indian Head Nickel, was minted from 1913 to 1938 and remains one of the most iconic designs in American coinage. Struck in copper-nickel, the coin was introduced as part of a broader movement to modernize U.S. coinage with designs reflecting distinctly American themes.

The obverse features a powerful composite portrait of a Native American, created by sculptor James Earle Fraser. Rather than model the image on a single person, Fraser combined features from multiple Native American individuals—including Iron Tail (Sioux), Two Moons (Cheyenne), and possibly John Big Tree (Seneca)—to create a dignified and striking representation. The word “LIBERTY” is engraved at the upper right, with the date typically found on the shoulder of the portrait.

The reverse depicts an American bison standing on a raised mound or, in later issues, on a flat plain. Fraser used Black Diamond, a bison at the Central Park Zoo in New York, as a model for the design, though it’s been debated whether the real animal was indeed the inspiration. The top of the coin reads “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA”, with “E PLURIBUS UNUM” above the bison's back, and the denomination “FIVE CENTS” below.

Buffalo nickels circulated widely across the country, and their rugged design often led to rapid wear, especially on the date. Today, they are highly collectible not just for their artistry, but for their place in a uniquely American cultural and historical narrative—symbolizing the frontier, the disappearing West, and early 20th-century U.S. identity.
