Description
This is an original World War II-era membership badge of the Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei (NSDAP), produced by the firm Werner Redo of Saarlautern, as indicated by the RZM code “M1/100” on the reverse. The NSDAP party badge was an essential insignia for all party members, worn on civilian clothing to visibly display political affiliation and loyalty to the party. The badge’s origins trace back to the early years of the NSDAP in the 1920s, when Adolf Hitler mandated that all members possess and wear the emblem. The design — a black swastika on a white field, surrounded by a red enamel border bearing the party name — was standardized by the party’s Reichszeugmeisterei (RZM), the central office responsible for the regulation and approval of political insignia and uniforms. By the mid-1930s, manufacturers such as Werner Redo were producing large quantities under strict quality control, with each piece bearing an RZM mark and manufacturer’s code. These badges were not merely decorative; they served as a visual pledge of loyalty and political identity. During the Third Reich, wearing the NSDAP badge could afford the bearer political advantages, while failing to display it at appropriate occasions could arouse suspicion. Members typically wore the badge during rallies, official events, and in public life to demonstrate their ideological commitment. Today, authentic examples such as this Werner Redo-made piece remain significant historical artifacts, offering tangible connections to the organizational structure, propaganda culture, and personal expressions of political allegiance in Nazi Germany. Surviving wartime examples are sought after by collectors and historians for their craftsmanship, political symbolism, and place in the material culture of the Third Reich.
