Description
WW2 German NSDAP Enamel Party Badge – RZM M1/157, Phil. Turks Witwe, Wien

This original World War II-era Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei (NSDAP) membership badge represents one of the most recognizable political insignia of the 20th century and a standardized emblem of the Nazi Party’s vast organizational structure. The design—featuring a black swastika within a white enamel roundel, encircled by a translucent red enamel border bearing the inscription "National-Sozialistische D.A.P."—was adopted in the party’s formative years as a visual declaration of membership. Initially produced in a variety of local styles during the 1920s, the badge’s design and manufacture were brought under strict centralized control in 1934, when the Reichszeugmeisterei (RZM) assumed oversight of all NSDAP regalia.

From that point onward, every authorized badge bore the RZM logo and an assigned M1 code for its maker. The reverse of this example is stamped RZM M1/157, identifying the manufacturer as Phil. Turks Witwe, Wien, a Viennese firm officially licensed to produce party membership pins. Austrian makers such as Phil. Turks Witwe became increasingly prominent after the 1938 Anschluss, supplying badges to both long-standing German party members and new Austrian recruits as the NSDAP rapidly expanded its membership rolls in the annexed territories.

Constructed with a die-struck brass base and finished in vitreous enamel, this example exhibits the fine quality typical of pre- and early-war manufacture, with a robust horizontal pin and catch soldered to the reverse. The deep red translucent enamel—achieved through multiple firings—contrasts sharply with the white central field and black swastika, providing the high visual impact that made the badge both a symbol of loyalty and a statement of political alignment. By the later war years, such fine enamel work was increasingly supplanted by painted zinc badges due to material shortages, making earlier examples like this particularly desirable to collectors.

Worn on the lapel of civilian clothing and sometimes on the breast pocket of uniforms, the NSDAP membership badge was a mandatory emblem for party members in public life. It served as a visible sign of ideological commitment, functioning as both a political statement and a marker of inclusion within the party’s hierarchy. For millions of Germans—and, after 1938, Austrians—this small item was a daily-worn affirmation of allegiance to Adolf Hitler and the NSDAP.

Today, badges such as this, with clear maker attribution to an authorized Austrian producer and well-preserved enamel, hold significant value for historians and collectors alike. They are tangible artifacts of the party’s centralized control over symbolism, the integration of Austria into the Third Reich’s political culture, and the mass mobilization of membership that underpinned the Nazi regime’s political apparatus.
