Description
The 47th (London) Infantry Division, nicknamed the "Bow Bells Division" after the iconic sound associated with London's East End, was a second-line Territorial Army formation rooted in the capital’s proud military tradition. Although the division did not see combat overseas during World War II, its contributions to the British war effort were nonetheless vital—especially in terms of homeland defense and force generation. Formed in September 1939 as a duplicate of the 56th (London) Infantry Division, the 47th Division was part of Britain’s rapid mobilization of territorial units following the outbreak of war. The division was composed primarily of Londoners, often with deep family connections to local regiments such as the Royal Fusiliers, Queen’s Royal Regiment, and Middlesex Regiment. Throughout the early years of the war, the 47th Division was stationed across southern England, tasked with coastal defense, air raid recovery, and preparing for a possible German invasion. During the height of the Battle of Britain and The Blitz, the division's men were instrumental in civil defense efforts, manning anti-aircraft positions, guarding key infrastructure, and helping maintain public order during German bombing raids. In addition to its defensive role, the 47th Division played a crucial part in preparing and training reinforcements for front-line service. Many of its battalions served as feeder units, supplying trained personnel to formations fighting in North Africa, Italy, and eventually France and northwest Europe. This quiet but essential duty ensured that Britain’s front-line forces remained reinforced and combat-effective. In 1944, the 47th Division was reorganized as a Reserve Division under Home Forces, emphasizing its role as a training and holding formation for soldiers recovering from wounds or retraining for redeployment. It was disbanded in August 1945, following the Allied victory in Europe. While it did not earn the battle honors of divisions that stormed beaches or crossed deserts, the 47th (London) Infantry Division represents the indispensable backbone of Britain’s wartime military machine—prepared for combat, committed to defense, and instrumental in sustaining the army's fighting strength throughout the war.
