Description
WW2 German NSDAP Enamel Party Badge – RZM M1/102 Frank & Reif, Stuttgart This is an original World War II-era National Socialist German Workers’ Party (NSDAP) membership badge, produced by the authorized firm Frank & Reif of Stuttgart under the Reichszeugmeisterei (RZM) system, bearing maker code M1/102. Measuring 24mm in diameter with a slightly convex profile, the badge is struck in tombac and finished with high-quality vitreous enamel. The obverse features the black swastika set against a white enamel field, encircled by a red enamel border inscribed NATIONAL-SOZIALISTISCHE-D.A.P. in black Gothic script. The reverse retains its horizontal safety-pin attachment and is clearly marked with the RZM logo above M1/102. The NSDAP membership badge originated in the early 1920s during the party’s formative years, initially produced in small, locally commissioned batches before any centralized manufacturing control. Early badges varied in size, finish, and fastening method, but the design—a black swastika on white, ringed in red—remained consistent, reflecting the colors of the party flag and intended to symbolize the unity of nationalist and socialist ideals. After the NSDAP rose to power in 1933, all party insignia production was placed under the control of the RZM, which regulated design specifications, materials, and authorized suppliers to maintain uniformity and prevent counterfeiting. Frank & Reif was a well-regarded metalworking firm in Stuttgart with a history of producing high-quality enamel insignia for both political and military organizations. Under the RZM system, their assigned code M1/102 identified them as an approved manufacturer of political badges. This badge would have been issued to a party member following official acceptance into the NSDAP, typically accompanied by a membership card. Members were expected to wear the badge daily on civilian attire—most commonly through the lapel buttonhole—as an outward sign of political allegiance. During the Third Reich, millions of such badges were produced, but variations in size, construction, and materials occurred depending on the period and manufacturer. Tombac examples like this, with superior enamel work, are generally associated with mid-war or earlier production, as later badges often utilized cheaper zinc alloy bases that were more prone to wear and enamel loss. Today, maker-marked, well-preserved examples—especially from recognized manufacturers like Frank & Reif—are valued not only as political artifacts but also as tangible remnants of the NSDAP’s rigidly organized propaganda and membership structure.
