Description
Adopted by the French military in 1926 as a successor to the earlier M1915 model, the Modèle 1926 Adrian helmet reflected both continuity and innovation in French combat gear. Retaining the iconic crest and ridged crown emblematic of the Adrian design, the M1926 featured a stamped one-piece steel shell—eliminating the multi-piece assembly of its predecessor. This advancement streamlined manufacturing and marginally increased structural integrity, although the helmet was still designed primarily to deflect shrapnel and debris rather than absorb ballistic impact.

This particular example is affixed with the infantry branch insignia: a stylized flaming grenade over the raised initials “RF” (République Française), struck from sheet metal and securely riveted to the front. This insignia denoted the service branch, as the Adrian system allowed for interchangeable branch badges (e.g., artillery, engineers, medical, etc.). The exterior is coated in a matte brown finish typical of the interwar and early World War II period, applied to reduce battlefield glare and suit a wider range of operational environments.

Inside, the helmet retains its original six-finger leather liner suspended by a split-pin system to create an air gap between the head and the shell—enhancing comfort and shock dispersion. The liner is backed by an oilcloth sweatband and anchored to a steel framework, while the adjustable leather chinstrap is riveted to fixed lugs on either side of the skirt. The M1926 remained the standard combat helmet for French metropolitan and colonial troops throughout the 1930s and into World War II. Even after the fall of France in 1940, both Vichy and Free French forces continued to issue the helmet, and examples were captured and reused by Axis units, including German auxiliary and occupation forces.

Although eventually supplanted by the US M1 and other Allied patterns later in the war, the M1926 Adrian stands as a distinctive artifact of France’s interwar military doctrine, emphasizing mobility, protection against fragmentation, and visual distinction of service roles through heraldic insignia.
