This original WW2 Waffen-SS tropical chevron represents the rank of Sturmmann—equivalent to a lance corporal or private first class in other military systems. This version was designed specifically for use with tropical uniforms worn in warmer climates such as North Africa, Italy, the Balkans, and occupied southern territories.

The chevron is machine-embroidered in golden-tan thread on a dark olive or black wool base, forming a sharply defined V-shape. The color combination is distinct from standard field-gray insignia and was intended for use on the sand-colored tunics of the tropical uniform set. The chevron would have been sewn to the upper left sleeve.

The rank of Sturmmann was the second enlisted grade in the SS, above Schütze, and denoted a soldier with basic experience and service tenure. The Waffen-SS, as the combat branch of the SS, deployed units across nearly every front during the war, and tropical uniforms were issued particularly to divisions operating in Mediterranean and Balkan theaters, including elements of the 7th SS “Prinz Eugen,” 13th SS “Handschar,” and others involved in anti-partisan operations and rear-area security.

This example remains in excellent condition with bright thread and no damage or repairs. A scarce and desirable insignia for collectors of foreign-theater SS items or specialized uniform variations.
