Description
This is an original WW2-era Royal Air Force (RAF) Wireless Air Gunner (WAG) brevet, manufactured in sterling silver by Birks of Canada. The front features a distinctive green enamel laurel wreath encircling the raised, dark blue enameled "WAG" initials, flanked by a detailed, outstretched wing to the right. This winged brevet was worn above the left breast pocket by qualified aircrew who operated radio equipment and manned defensive armament aboard RAF bombers. Of exceptional note, this example is named and engraved on the reverse:
"To Annie from Phil, 24.6.43" — making it a highly personal wartime artifact. The reverse also bears the "BIRKS STERLING" maker’s mark. Birks was a major Canadian jeweler contracted to produce RAF insignia during the war for both British and Commonwealth forces. This particular piece may have been a sweetheart gift or personal keepsake from a Canadian WAG to a loved one, given shortly after qualification or prior to deployment. The Wireless Air Gunner brevet was introduced in 1940 to designate aircrew members who specialized in both radio communications and aerial gunnery, crucial roles during bombing operations over occupied Europe. WAGs flew in aircraft such as the Avro Lancaster, Handley Page Halifax, and Vickers Wellington. A superb and rare piece of sterling silver RAF insignia with wartime personalization—ideal for collectors of RAF aircrew wings or WW2 aviation memorabilia.
