Description
This is an original World War II-era Heer (German Army) officer’s visor cap wreath and cockade insignia set, as worn on the front of the Schirmmütze (peaked service cap). The wreath is die-struck aluminum with crisply defined oak leaves and acorns—traditional German military symbols representing strength, honor, and steadfastness. The national cockade (Reichskokarde) sits in the center, featuring concentric rings of black and silver with a red felt core, symbolizing the national colors of the Third Reich. The cockade and wreath assembly was worn by all ranks of the Wehrmacht Heer, but the silver aluminum version was specifically designated for officers. Enlisted men wore a more subdued version in stamped zinc or grey-painted steel. This set retains both prongs and pins in excellent condition, indicating it would have originally been affixed to a private-purchase officer’s visor cap (Dienstmütze), a central element of the German Army dress uniform. Introduced during the Reichswehr period and standardized under the Wehrmacht from 1935 onward, the design remained largely unchanged throughout the war. The oak leaf wreath design flared around the base of the crown of the cap, while the cockade represented allegiance to the German Reich, distinct from the eagle and swastika cap badge denoting service to the Führer. This original set offers an authentic glimpse into the uniform standards and symbolism of the German Army officer corps during World War II.
