Description
WW2 US Army Air Forces Flight Officer’s Class A Service Jacket – Named to W. Simon, 1945 Dated

This is an original World War II United States Army Air Forces Class A service jacket, named to Flight Officer W. Simon and dated August 1945. The jacket was custom tailored by Kahn Tailoring Co. of Indianapolis and features a high-quality wool construction with rayon lining. The tailor label confirms a delivery date of 8/45 via the Hondo Army Air Field Exchange, a major flight training base in Texas known for advanced pilot and bombardier instruction under the Central Flying Training Command.

The jacket is adorned with Flight Officer rank insignia on each shoulder strap—rectangular brass bars with blue enamel, indicating the warrant-grade aviation rank introduced in 1942 to address the growing need for technically trained aircrew officers. The shoulder bears a finely hand-sewn Army Air Forces patch, with its golden wings and red-centered star emblem set on a vibrant blue felt background—symbolic of the AAF’s global reach during the conflict.

Original gilt "U.S." collar discs are present, and the uniform retains all its buttons and the original matching waist belt with brass buckle. The inner lining shows the tailor’s mark along with the soldier’s name and clothing order details. Though tailored late in the war, this jacket remains a tangible link to the men who served during the final stages of the conflict and the post-V-E Day occupation planning period.

Flight Officers like Simon were often assigned to vital roles as pilots, navigators, or bombardiers within bomber and transport squadrons. Many served across theaters from the ETO to the Pacific in everything from B-17s and B-24s to C-47s and liaison aircraft.

A desirable example of a late-war AAF officer’s uniform with excellent provenance and uncommon tailoring detail, suitable for advanced collectors of Army Air Forces material.
