Description
WW2 US Army A.S.T.P. Private First Class Class A Jacket – Named to A. Machinzia – Size 37 – 1940 Dated This is an original World War II-era U.S. Army enlisted man’s Class A service coat, tailor-made in 1940 by the Jersey Coat Co. Inc. and worn by a Private First Class in the Army Specialized Training Program (ASTP). The uniform is named to A. Machinzia and retains clear period markings in the interior lining. The original contract label is intact and dated 2/7/40, indicating manufacture to Specification No. 8-31D under Philadelphia QM Depot oversight. The jacket features the distinctive shoulder sleeve insignia of the Army Specialized Training Program—a blue and gold emblem depicting a stylized sword and Greek helmet, symbolizing the program’s fusion of military training and academic education. The sleeve also bears the rank insignia for Private First Class, sewn in place on both arms. Constructed from high-quality wool serge, the jacket follows the 1939-1942 pattern with four patch pockets and brass General Service buttons. The Army Specialized Training Program was established in 1942 to provide technically skilled personnel for the Army in fields such as engineering, foreign languages, and medicine. Candidates were often high-achieving college students selected for accelerated education at universities before transferring into regular military service. Though the program was short-lived—largely dissolved by 1944 due to manpower demands in combat theaters—ASTP alumni served with distinction across various branches of the Army, often bringing valuable technical and intellectual expertise to the field. This well-preserved example offers a rare glimpse into the life of an ASTP soldier at the early stages of America’s wartime mobilization, bridging the worlds of academia and military service.
