Description
The 364th Infantry Regiment was originally constituted during World War I as part of the 91st Division, but in World War II, it became known for a separate and complex history. Reactivated during the early 1940s, the 364th was a segregated African American regiment, composed primarily of Black enlisted soldiers under white officers—a common practice in the segregated U.S. Army at the time. The regiment’s motto or nickname, “Cross and Oak,” likely references its distinctive unit insignia, which features a cross symbol and oak leaves—emblems often associated with strength and endurance. During World War II, the 364th Infantry Regiment was initially stationed at Camp Claiborne, Louisiana, where it experienced harsh conditions and systemic racial discrimination. Tensions between Black soldiers and the local civilian population were high, and the regiment was eventually relocated after incidents of violence and racial unrest, including the controversial Camp Van Dorn incident in Mississippi, which remains a topic of historical inquiry and debate. The regiment was eventually reassigned and sent to the Pacific Theater, where it participated in limited support and security operations. However, due to the policies of segregation and the army’s reluctance to deploy Black combat units in front-line roles, the 364th was never given the opportunity to engage in major combat as a full regiment. Portions of the unit were broken up, reassigned, or absorbed into labor or port battalion roles. Despite these challenges, the men of the 364th and similar segregated units demonstrated resilience, professionalism, and a deep commitment to service. Their story reflects the broader struggle of African American soldiers during the war—fighting for freedom abroad while facing discrimination at home. After the war, the 364th Infantry Regiment was deactivated, and its history became part of the larger narrative that led to President Harry S. Truman’s Executive Order 9981 in 1948, which desegregated the U.S. military. At VDG Militaria, we are dedicated to providing collectors with an exceptional selection of original military antiques.
