Description

This is a genuine World War II-era American Defense Service Medal awarded to United States Navy personnel who served honorably during the tense pre-war years from September 8, 1939, to December 7, 1941. This example features the correct early-war slot brooch suspension and the desirable “FLEET” bar, denoting duty aboard vessels of the active fleet during this critical period of escalating global conflict.

The medal was established by Executive Order 8808, signed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt on June 28, 1941, to recognize members of the U.S. Armed Forces who participated in the nation’s defense preparations prior to its formal entry into World War II. The inclusion of the “FLEET” clasp signifies that the recipient served on board a ship operating as part of the U.S. Navy’s active sea-going force, often on neutrality patrols, convoy escorts, or readiness deployments in the Atlantic and Pacific. These missions were vital to deterring Axis naval activity and maintaining the fragile peace while preparing for the likelihood of war.

The medal’s obverse features a standing figure of Liberty holding a sword in a defensive posture before a rising sun, symbolizing vigilance and the nation’s growing martial readiness. The reverse is inscribed with the words:

“FOR SERVICE DURING THE LIMITED EMERGENCY PROCLAIMED BY THE PRESIDENT ON SEPTEMBER 8, 1939 OR DURING THE UNLIMITED EMERGENCY PROCLAIMED BY THE PRESIDENT ON MAY 27, 1941.”

This piece is complete with its original yellow silk ribbon bearing narrow blue, white, and red stripes, representing the Army, Navy, and national colors respectively. The slot brooch and bronze FLEET bar are intact, showing honest age and wear.

An important pre-war decoration that captures the tension, discipline, and preparation of the U.S. Navy in the lead-up to World War II. Ideal for collectors of early WW2 Navy service medals or American military mobilization memorabilia.
