Description
The 1918 United States Mercury Dime, officially known as the Winged Liberty Head Dime, was minted during the final year of World War I and reflects both artistic refinement and national optimism. Designed by sculptor Adolph A. Weinman, this coin replaced the Barber dime in 1916 and introduced a distinctly modern aesthetic to American coinage. The obverse features a youthful Liberty facing left, wearing a winged cap—symbolizing freedom of thought. The resemblance to the Roman god Mercury led to the coin’s popular nickname, though the figure is Liberty, not the mythological messenger. The word “LIBERTY” arches across the top, with “IN GOD WE TRUST” and the date “1918” below. The reverse displays a fasces—a bundle of rods bound around an axe—representing strength through unity and authority, paired with an olive branch that symbolizes peace. The inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “ONE DIME” encircle the imagery, with “E PLURIBUS UNUM” tucked into the field. Struck in 90% silver, the Mercury dime circulated widely in American commerce and saw use during a time of war, pandemic, and post-war transition. The 1918 issue was produced at three mints—Philadelphia (no mint mark), Denver (D), and San Francisco (S). Coins from this year often show signs of circulation, but high-grade examples are appreciated for their fine detail and striking Art Deco style. As both a product of its time and a symbol of American ideals, the 1918 Mercury Dime endures as one of the most celebrated and collected silver coins in U.S. numismatic history.
