Description
WW2-Era USMC Sharpshooter Qualification Badge – Sterling by N.S. Meyer Inc., New York This is an original World War II-era United States Marine Corps Sharpshooter Qualification Badge, awarded to Marines who demonstrated above-average marksmanship during annual rifle qualification. Struck in sterling silver and maker-marked by N.S. Meyer Inc. of New York, this badge features the correct wartime hallmark and “STERLING” designation, indicating period manufacture and compliance with US military insignia standards of the time. The badge consists of a rectangular bar reading “SHARPSHOOTER”, suspended from a Maltese cross with a central bullseye target. This design was standardized by the Marine Corps in the 1920s and remained in continuous use throughout WW2 and beyond. The badge was worn on the service uniform above the left breast pocket. Award Criteria – US Marine Corps Rifle Qualification (WW2 Era) During World War II, all enlisted Marines and officers were required to qualify annually with the standard service rifle, most commonly the M1903 Springfield or later the M1 Garand, depending on availability and period. The Marine Corps Qualification Course was conducted at ranges of 200, 300, and 500 yards, emphasizing precision marksmanship at long distances. The scoring system was based on a possible 250 points. Qualification levels were awarded based on the following general score ranges:
-
Marksman: 190–209 points -
Sharpshooter: 210–219 points -
Expert: 220–250 points
To receive the Sharpshooter Badge, a Marine had to consistently demonstrate controlled, accurate fire from various shooting positions—standing, kneeling, sitting, and prone—under timed conditions, including rapid-fire sequences. Instructors emphasized trigger discipline, sight alignment, breath control, and use of the sling for steady aim. The Marine Corps placed exceptional emphasis on marksmanship as a core element of its identity, more so than any other American military branch during the war. Earning the Sharpshooter qualification was regarded as a point of pride and was often required for promotion eligibility and assignment to frontline infantry units. Marines who failed to qualify at least as Marksman could be reassigned to non-combat duties. This sterling silver example was produced by N.S. Meyer Inc., one of the most respected military insignia manufacturers of the era. The detailed construction and surviving condition reflect the quality standards expected of regulation USMC awards.
