WW1 US Victory Medal with Privately Engraved Recipient Name “R.E. STOUT”

This is an original World War I United States Victory Medal featuring a privately engraved recipient name, “R.E. STOUT,” on the rim. The engraving is hand-applied in block lettering and was almost certainly done after issue, reflecting a common practice among veterans who sought to personalize or commemorate their service after returning home. The medal retains its original rainbow-colored silk ribbon and full wrap brooch, showing signs of period wear but remaining in very good condition overall.

The Victory Medal was established by the War Department in 1919 to recognize all members of the United States armed forces who served in World War I. Eligibility extended to those who served on active duty between April 6, 1917, and November 11, 1918, with additional eligibility through April 1, 1920, for those who participated in postwar occupation or intervention operations, including service in Germany, North Russia, and Siberia. The decoration was issued without clasps to personnel who did not serve in designated combat zones or campaigns, while those who served in major operations received bronze bars bearing the names of specific engagements such as Meuse-Argonne, St. Mihiel, or Ypres-Lys.

The obverse of the medal features the allegorical winged figure of Victory, symbolizing martial honor and triumph. The reverse is inscribed with the phrase “The Great War for Civilization” and surrounded by the names of Allied nations, centered on a fasces symbolizing authority, unity, and republican ideals. Although this particular example bears no battle clasps, it remains a significant piece of personal and national history, reflecting the wide reach of American military service in the First World War.
