Description
WW2 German NS-RKB Breast Eagle – Nationalsozialistische Reichskriegerbund Veterans’ Badge by Förster & Barth (M.M. 10) This is an original WW2-era breast eagle of the Nationalsozialistische Reichskriegerbund (NS-RKB), or National Socialist War Victims’ Care Organization, a veterans’ association closely affiliated with the Nazi Party. Manufactured in die-struck aluminum alloy and silvered, the badge features the iconic German national eagle clutching a swastika, with a black Iron Cross superimposed at the center of the breast—symbolizing the organization's roots in Imperial and World War I-era veterans’ traditions. This example is maker marked “10”, denoting manufacture by Förster & Barth, located in Pforzheim, a city well-known for badge and medal production during the Third Reich period. The reverse is also marked GES. GESCH., short for Gesetzlich Geschützt, indicating the design was legally protected under German trademark law. Notably, this example has a period pin assembly, though the catch on the reverse is missing. The NS-RKB was created in 1938 as the Nazi regime forcibly centralized and absorbed older veterans’ groups into a single umbrella organization loyal to the state. It replaced the more traditional Reichskriegerbund Kyffhäuser and inherited both its structure and its symbolic legacy. Members of the NS-RKB wore this eagle badge on their service uniforms, including tunics worn at parades, commemorative events, and state-sponsored memorial services. While its original mission was to support wounded and aging WW1 veterans, under National Socialist control the organization became deeply involved in ideological indoctrination, Nazi pageantry, and wartime propaganda. Its membership included men who had been deemed unfit for frontline duty but who remained active in homefront service, ceremonial guard units, and local military functions. This badge represents both the ceremonial militarism of the Third Reich and the regime’s broader effort to control and politicize Germany’s military heritage. It remains a detailed and historically significant artifact, particularly as a maker-marked example from a well-documented wartime manufacturer.
