Description
This is an original World War II-era United States Army Combat Infantryman Badge (CIB), crafted in sterling silver and marked “STERLING” on the reverse. This example features a true flat-back reverse with smooth, untextured surface and early wartime domed clutchback fasteners, consistent with WW2 manufacturing specifications. The badge’s iconic design—an oxidized Springfield Arsenal-style flintlock musket set against an infantry blue field, enclosed by a silver oak wreath—symbolizes the lineage, bravery, and endurance of the American infantryman.

Established by the War Department on October 27, 1943, and retroactive to December 6, 1941, the Combat Infantryman Badge was created to formally recognize the unique sacrifices of infantry soldiers serving in active ground combat. It was awarded only to enlisted men and officers holding an infantry Military Occupational Specialty (MOS), assigned to infantry units of brigade size or smaller, and who were personally present and engaged in direct combat with the enemy. The criteria were intentionally narrow: rear-echelon personnel, artillerymen, engineers, and other combat support troops, even if under fire, were not eligible unless they were reassigned to infantry units and performed as riflemen or squad leaders in battle.

The CIB quickly became a mark of honor among combat veterans, valued not just for its symbolism but also for the distinction it brought. In 1947, Congress authorized the retroactive award of the Bronze Star Medal to any recipient of the CIB who had engaged in ground combat, underscoring the badge’s importance as a recognition of valor and sustained exposure to enemy action. For many frontline infantrymen, it was the most meaningful decoration they would wear.

This sterling silver flat-back example is an outstanding and authentic representation of the earliest CIB issues. Its construction and fastening method firmly date it to the World War II period, and it serves as a powerful reminder of the harsh realities of infantry combat and the soldiers who endured them.
