Description
WW1 Belgian Inter-Allied Victory Medal – La Grande Guerre pour la Civilisation This is an original Belgian version of the Inter-Allied Victory Medal (Médaille Interalliée de la Victoire / Intergeallieerde Overwinningsmedaille), awarded by the Kingdom of Belgium to honor military personnel who served during the First World War. Like all Allied versions of the Victory Medal, it features the characteristic rainbow ribbon, a symbol of unity among the victorious nations. The obverse shows a classical winged Victory figure, while the reverse is unique to the Belgian issue: it features the royal arms of Belgium surrounded by the national shields of the other Allied powers, encircled by the inscription “La Grande Guerre pour la Civilisation – De Groote Oorlog tot de Beschaving” in both French and Dutch. Belgium’s role in the Great War was both tragic and heroic. On August 4, 1914, Germany launched its invasion of neutral Belgium in violation of the Treaty of London (1839), which had guaranteed Belgian neutrality. The German advance aimed to bypass French defenses via the Schlieffen Plan, but Belgian resistance proved unexpectedly fierce. King Albert I led his army in person, famously refusing to surrender as German forces overran cities like Liège and Namur. The siege of Liège in particular delayed the German timetable and gave the Allies time to mobilize. Though outnumbered and outgunned, the Belgian Army conducted a stubborn defense along the Yser River and retreated into a sliver of unoccupied territory in West Flanders, where it held the front near Nieuwpoort and Diksmuide for the rest of the war. Throughout the occupation, the civilian population endured extreme hardship, including forced labor, executions, and economic exploitation. The destruction of the medieval city of Leuven and other atrocities became international symbols of German aggression, fueling Allied propaganda and support for the war. Behind the lines, the Belgian government operated in exile from Sainte-Adresse, France, and coordinated with the Allies while maintaining morale at home. Belgian forces eventually took part in the final Allied offensives in 1918, reclaiming their lost territory as Germany collapsed. This medal was awarded by royal decree on July 15, 1919, to Belgian military and eligible foreign volunteers who served under Belgian command between August 1, 1914, and November 11, 1918. This example retains its original ribbon and bronze patina, offering a tangible connection to the gallantry and suffering of a small nation that refused to submit. Belgium’s resistance helped shape international opinion and played a disproportionately important role in the early and final stages of the First World War.
