WW2 Imperial Japanese Navy Sleeve Rank Insignia – Leading Seaman (水兵長 Suiheichō)

This original WW2-era Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) sleeve rank insignia represents the enlisted rank of Leading Seaman, or 水兵長 (Suiheichō) in Japanese. The patch features a bright yellow anchor and three horizontal bars hand-embroidered in silk thread on a black wool background, backed with a beige cotton liner. This type of rank insignia was worn on the upper sleeve of naval working or dress uniforms and denoted a senior enlisted sailor with increased responsibility and technical experience. The rank of Leading Seaman sat above Seaman First Class (一等水兵, Ittōsuihei) and below Petty Officer Third Class (三等兵曹, Santōheisō), placing the wearer in a key transitional role within the shipboard hierarchy.
