Description
US Marine Corps Mexican Service Medal 1911–1917 – Remounted with Crimp Brooch This is an original U.S. Marine Corps Mexican Service Medal awarded to Marines who took part in expeditionary operations along the Mexican coast and borderlands between 1911 and 1917—a period marked by political upheaval in Mexico and growing American military involvement in the region. Authorized by Navy Department General Orders in 1918, this medal commemorates the service of Marines who deployed during the Mexican Revolution and the broader context of U.S. interventionist policies during the early 20th century. The years inscribed on the medal—1911 to 1917—encompass a turbulent chapter in Mexican history. Following the overthrow of longtime President Porfirio Díaz, Mexico descended into a prolonged civil conflict as multiple factions vied for power. Amid fears of German influence in the Western Hemisphere and concern for American lives and economic interests, the United States undertook a series of armed actions, including blockades, landings, and occupations in Mexico and nearby waters. The most significant engagement recognized by this medal was the occupation of Veracruz in April 1914, when U.S. Navy and Marine forces landed to prevent a German arms shipment from reaching Mexican General Victoriano Huerta. The battle resulted in the deaths of nearly 20 Americans and over 150 Mexican defenders and marked a rare instance of U.S. troops engaging in sustained urban combat prior to World War I. Marines also served in Tampico, the Dominican Republic, aboard ships patrolling Mexican waters, and on the U.S.–Mexico border during periods of increased tension, including in response to raids by revolutionary leader Pancho Villa. The obverse of the medal features the fortress of San Juan de Ulúa, which overlooks the port of Veracruz—a visual reminder of the 1914 intervention. The reverse displays the U.S. Marine Corps emblem (eagle, globe, and anchor) above the words “UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS FOR SERVICE,” framed by a laurel wreath representing military honor and accomplishment. This particular example has been remounted with a later crimp brooch, likely for continued wear or reissue to a veteran during the interwar period. The ribbon, with its symbolic colors of ultramarine, yellow, and green, remains vivid. The medal itself displays an attractive aged bronze patina with sharp, uncleaned detail. As an artifact, the Mexican Service Medal represents the evolution of American expeditionary doctrine in the early 20th century. It stands as a tangible link between the era of “gunboat diplomacy” and the larger global role the U.S. military would soon undertake during World War I.
