This is a post-World War II crimp brooch restrike of the 1898 Spanish Campaign Medal, originally established by the United States War Department in 1905 to recognize service during the Spanish-American War. The medal was awarded to members of the US Army who served in the theater of operations between May 11 and August 16, 1898, particularly in Cuba, Puerto Rico, and the Philippine Islands during key offensives against Spanish colonial forces. The obverse of the medal features a trophy of arms, with a cannon, flags, and rifles arranged behind a shield, all crowned by an eagle. Around the edge is the inscription “War with Spain”. The reverse bears the words “United States Army / For Service / In the / War With Spain / 1898”, encircled by a laurel wreath. The ribbon is golden yellow, symbolizing the tropical theaters in which many soldiers served.
