Description
Struck in 1964, this South African 10 Cent coin reflects the nation's early years as a republic following its official withdrawal from the British Commonwealth in 1961. Featuring Queen Elizabeth II’s effigy was no longer appropriate by this time—thus, the coin instead depicts Jan van Riebeeck on the obverse, the Dutch colonial administrator considered a founding figure in South African settler history. The reverse displays the denomination “10 C” with a stylized protea flower, the national flower of South Africa, a symbol of growth and renewal. Minted in 50% silver, this coin represents one of the last circulating silver issues before the country shifted entirely to base metals later in the decade. This 10-cent piece comes from the early decimal coinage system introduced in 1961 when South Africa adopted the Rand, replacing the British-influenced shilling-based system. Amid intensifying apartheid policies, this coin is emblematic of South Africa's drive for a distinct national identity and independence from British imperial imagery, even as it remained isolated on the world stage. It stands as a tangible relic from a turbulent chapter in the nation's modern history. At VDG Militaria, we are dedicated to providing collectors with an exceptional selection of original military antiques.
