Description
This is an original matching pair of wartime German Wehrmacht shoulder boards worn by a Feldwebel (Sergeant) in one of the Ostlegionen, the Eastern volunteer formations composed of non-German troops serving under German command during World War II. The boards are constructed of standard field-grey wool and feature three rows of cream-colored Tresse braid, denoting the rank of Feldwebel per Wehrmacht regulations. These slip-on style boards are unpiped, consistent with many foreign volunteer or auxiliary uniform variants issued to Eastern troops. The Ostlegionen ("Eastern Legions") encompassed a wide range of volunteer and conscripted formations drawn from the Soviet Union and occupied territories—among them Russians, Ukrainians, Georgians, Armenians, and Central Asians—often organized into national battalions or legions under German leadership. These foreign volunteers were initially part of the Wehrmacht Heer and later also the Waffen-SS, though many retained unique insignia, rank structures, and often wore simplified or modified German uniforms to distinguish their non-German origin. The shoulder boards shown here are typical of those issued to these units, especially during mid-to-late war, when resource shortages and organizational diversity led to varied insignia across formations. Foreign volunteer units were deployed throughout the Eastern Front and in rear-area security roles, though many were later consolidated into front-line combat units. As the war progressed and German losses mounted, these volunteers became increasingly vital to the German war effort—though many joined less out of ideology and more from coercion, survival, or opposition to Stalin’s regime. This set is a rare and evocative artifact of one of the lesser-known but historically significant aspects of the German war machine: its reliance on foreign manpower from across Europe and Eurasia in its ultimately doomed struggle against the Soviet Union.
