This is an original WW2 cloth volunteer shield worn by Georgian troops serving in the German military. Printed on tan rayon with bold red, black, and white heraldry beneath the title “GEORGIEN,” this sleeve insignia identified personnel of the Georgische Legion, one of the many national volunteer formations recruited by Germany from within the Soviet Union during the Second World War.

After the launch of Operation Barbarossa in June 1941, the Wehrmacht encountered widespread disaffection among non-Russian ethnic groups within the Red Army. In German-occupied areas of the Caucasus, many Georgians—motivated by anti-Soviet sentiment, memories of the short-lived Democratic Republic of Georgia (1918–1921), and the brutal repression that followed its Soviet annexation—volunteered to serve in German uniform.

The Georgische Legion was formally established in 1942 under the umbrella of the Ostlegionen, auxiliary forces made up of Soviet nationals. Numbering approximately 30,000 men at its peak, the Georgian Legion was organized into multiple battalions, many of which were attached to the German Army (Heer) and Luftwaffe. These included Schützen-Bataillone (rifle battalions), Feld-Bataillone (field battalions), and Nachschub units (supply and logistics formations).

Georgian units served across a variety of theaters including the Eastern Front, the Crimea, and the Balkans, where they were used primarily for rear-area security, anti-partisan operations, and guarding supply routes. In France, elements of the Georgian Legion were deployed to coastal defenses as part of the Atlantic Wall, most notably at Texel Island, where in April 1945, Georgian troops of Georgisches Infanterie-Bataillon 822 (Königin Tamara) launched a dramatic mutiny against their German overseers in what became known as the Texel Uprising—sometimes referred to as the “last battle of Europe.”

Commanded in part by General Shalva Maghlakelidze, a former officer of the Georgian People’s Guard and later a political émigré, the Legion sought to balance nationalist aspirations with survival in a chaotic wartime landscape. Although nominally serving the Third Reich, many Georgian volunteers viewed their service as a pathway to future independence from Soviet domination.

This printed sleeve shield was worn on the upper right sleeve of the German uniform and was manufactured under standardized patterns used for Ostlegionen insignia. These insignia, while simple in design, carry the deep and often tragic legacy of foreign volunteers caught between empires in one of WW2’s most brutal fronts.
