Description
This original World War II US Army Paratrooper badge is mounted on a hand-embroidered light blue and royal blue oval, representing the glider forces of the 101st Airborne Division. The wings are sterling silver, clutch-back style, with the “STERLING” hallmark clearly stamped on the reverse—a textbook wartime US-made badge. The insignia is tightly affixed to the oval, which would have been worn on the uniform as a distinctive background to airborne qualification badges. The blue and light blue coloring signifies glider troops as opposed to parachute infantry. This set is attributed to the 401st Glider Infantry Regiment (GIR) of the famed 101st Airborne Division, also known as the "Screaming Eagles." The 401st GIR holds a unique place in Airborne history. Initially activated in 1942, the regiment was originally composed of two battalions and was slated to serve in a traditional glider infantry role. However, in early 1943, the regiment was split: the 1st Battalion was permanently detached and reassigned to the 82nd Airborne Division, while the 2nd Battalion became the 3rd Battalion of the 327th Glider Infantry Regiment within the 101st. Despite this reorganization, the men of the 401st saw extensive combat service under their new regimental designations. They were among the first American troops to enter combat in Operation Overlord, parachuting or landing by glider into Normandy on June 6, 1944. As part of the 327th GIR, former 401st troops were instrumental in securing causeways off Utah Beach and repelling German counterattacks in the hedgerows of Normandy. The regiment then participated in Operation Market Garden in September 1944, landing near Eindhoven and fighting through the Netherlands to secure bridges across the Rhine. During the Battle of the Bulge, the 327th and its former 401st elements were at the heart of the defense of Bastogne, holding key positions against relentless German assaults during the siege. In April 1945, the regiment took part in the final Allied push into Germany and was present for the liberation of key areas in Bavaria and Austria. This insignia represents not only a specific combat unit but also the evolution and adaptability of airborne forces during WW2. The sterling jump wings combined with the hand-sewn glider oval evoke the elite nature of glider troops—often overlooked but vital to the success of airborne operations.
