This is an original example of the German Colonial Medal, officially titled the Kolonialdenkmünze für Kämpfer, instituted on June 13, 1912, by Kaiser Wilhelm II to honor German military personnel who had participated in combat operations in the colonies of the German Empire. Although established before the outbreak of the First World War, the medal was awarded retroactively for colonial campaigns from the 1880s through the early 20th century—including the Herero and Namaqua Genocide in German South West Africa (modern-day Namibia), the Boxer Rebellion in China, and the Maji Maji Rebellion in German East Africa.
Struck in bronze, the obverse features the imperial crown over a crossed sword and palm frond, symbolizing military valor and victory abroad, encircled by the legend Den tapferen Kriegern für Deutschlands Ehre (“To the brave warriors for Germany’s honor”). The reverse bears the imperial German eagle above the inscription Kolonialkriege (“Colonial Wars”). The ribbon is black with white stripes—national colors of the German Empire—flanked by red, yellow, and black stripes representing the colonies.
The German Colonial Medal reflects a period when the German Empire sought to assert itself as a global power alongside Britain and France. While often overlooked in modern discussions of World War I, Germany’s colonial soldiers and overseas actions were integral to its military tradition and geopolitical ambitions. This decoration served both as a campaign commemorative and as a political tool to promote imperial pride and loyalty among those who fought far from the Reich’s European borders. It remains a striking artifact of Germany’s short-lived colonial era and the military legacy it left behind.
