Description
This is an original example of the German 1939 Wound Badge in Black, constructed with a brass core and finished in matte black paint—an earlier-war production variant that predated the more common late-war zinc versions. The badge was instituted by Adolf Hitler on 1 September 1939, the same day as the invasion of Poland, and was modeled after the First World War design introduced in 1918 by Kaiser Wilhelm II. The badge was awarded to all ranks of the Wehrmacht, Waffen-SS, Kriegsmarine, and Luftwaffe, as well as to members of the civilian population (such as nurses or factory workers) who were wounded in direct association with military operations. The 1939-pattern wound badge came in three grades—Black for one or two wounds, Silver for three or four wounds, and Gold for five or more wounds or for wounds resulting in total disability. This example, the Black Grade, was the most commonly awarded. Its design features a German Stahlhelm (steel helmet) with a superimposed swastika over two crossed swords, surrounded by an oval oak leaf wreath. The badge measures approximately 36mm x 44mm and was typically worn on the lower left breast pocket of the tunic. Early brass-core versions like this one were typically issued from 1939 through roughly 1941, after which manufacturers began transitioning to the more cost-effective and easily produced zinc alloy. The brass variants often show superior detail and wear characteristics compared to their zinc counterparts. This badge represents one of the earliest mass-produced military decorations of the Third Reich, and it serves as a somber reminder of the scale of battlefield injury among German troops during WW2.
