Description
This German three-place medal bar represents a span of service from the First World War through the early years of the Third Reich, combining awards that reflect both front-line military participation and later political loyalty. From left to right, the bar features the Iron Cross 2nd Class (Eisernes Kreuz II. Klasse), the Honor Cross of the World War 1914/1918 (Hindenburg Cross), and the Medal for the Annexation of Austria (Anschluss Medal)—each mounted in traditional fashion on a backing bar with pin assembly, worn on parade or dress uniforms. The Iron Cross 2nd Class, established by Kaiser Wilhelm II in 1914, was awarded for acts of bravery or leadership in the field. It was one of Imperial Germany’s most iconic military decorations, easily recognized by its blackened iron core framed in silver and inscribed with “1914” on the lower arm. This decoration marked the recipient as a front-line combatant during the Great War. Next is the Hindenburg Cross, officially named the Ehrenkreuz des Weltkriegs 1914/1918, instituted in 1934 by President Paul von Hindenburg. It was awarded to all German veterans who served in combat during World War I, and was the first official service decoration of the Third Reich. This example, featuring crossed swords, denotes a combatant award and was issued to recognize both military service and sacrifice in the wartime generation. The third decoration is the Medal for the Return of Austria into the German Reich, commonly called the Anschluss Medal, instituted in 1938 to commemorate the German annexation of Austria. It was awarded to military and civilian personnel who contributed to or supported the peaceful annexation of Austria into Nazi Germany in March 1938. Its inclusion on this bar suggests the recipient was still active in a governmental, paramilitary, or military role in the early years of the Third Reich, possibly within the Wehrmacht, Polizei, or political service. Together, this medal bar offers a concise but powerful timeline: from Imperial service in the trenches of the First World War, through recognition during the interwar period, and culminating in support of the Nazi regime’s territorial expansion in the late 1930s. It is a historically rich piece of militaria, reflecting both personal service and the broader arc of German military and political evolution from the Kaiserreich to the Third Reich.
