This is an original German Infantry Assault Badge (Infanterie-Sturmabzeichen) dating from the Second World War, in a semi-relic condition due to zinc degradation. The badge design—an oval oak leaf wreath surrounding a Karabiner 98k rifle with fixed bayonet and sling—remains identifiable despite surface erosion. This example was die-struck from zinc, a material commonly used later in the war due to metal shortages. Over time, many zinc badges developed the characteristic dull, pitted surface and loss of fine detail seen here, a phenomenon often referred to as "zinc pest." Instituted in December 1939 by Generaloberst Walther von Brauchitsch, the Infantry Assault Badge was awarded to German Army and Waffen-SS personnel who took part in three or more infantry assaults, counter-attacks, reconnaissance operations, or hand-to-hand engagements on the front lines. It was originally intended for infantrymen, but eligibility was later expanded to include other frontline troops such as engineers serving in an infantry role.
