Description
WW2 German NSDAP Enamel Party Badge Pin – RZM M1/93 Gottlieb Friedrich Keck, Pforzheim This is an original WW2-era NSDAP (Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei) membership badge, produced by the authorized firm Gottlieb Friedrich Keck of Pforzheim and marked with the RZM manufacturer code M1/93. The badge is struck in brass, measuring approximately 24 mm in diameter, with a soldered horizontal pin assembly on the reverse. The obverse features the standardized party emblem — a black mobile swastika set within a white enamel roundel, surrounded by the inscription National-Sozialistische D.A.P. in raised lettering against a red enamel field. The reverse is stamped with the RZM logo above the M1/93 maker’s code, confirming production under Reichszeugmeisterei regulations introduced in 1934. The NSDAP membership badge originated in the early 1920s, when the party sought to unify members through a consistent, easily recognizable symbol of allegiance. Initially, early badges varied widely in size, lettering style, and construction, with some produced by local jewelers. By the mid-1930s, the Reichszeugmeisterei (RZM) centralized control over all insignia production, standardizing dimensions, design, and quality, while assigning numerical codes to authorized manufacturers. This ensured that only officially sanctioned badges could be worn, reinforcing party discipline and visual uniformity across the Reich. Membership badges were worn primarily on the left lapel of civilian clothing, functioning as a visible statement of political affiliation. They were also worn on certain uniforms, particularly in early SA and party functionary dress, before being integrated into the broader array of official insignia. As symbols of personal commitment to the party, badges were issued upon acceptance of membership and were retained for life unless revoked for disciplinary or political reasons. Gottlieb Friedrich Keck operated in Pforzheim, a major center for German jewelry, medal, and insignia production. The firm specialized in fine enamel work, and M1/93-marked badges are recognized for their consistent quality and accurate detail. This example, with its crisp enamel and correct reverse markings, represents the prewar to early-war production period when brass and high-quality vitreous enamel were still used. Later in the war, shortages led to the introduction of zinc-based, painted badges with noticeably lower finish quality. This badge stands as a precise example of the standardized NSDAP membership insignia, manufactured under the tightly regulated RZM system, and reflects both the technical craftsmanship of Pforzheim workshops and the political control mechanisms of the Third Reich’s central procurement authority.
