Description
United States 1900 “P” Morgan Silver Dollar – Philadelphia Mint The 1900 Morgan Silver Dollar, struck at the Philadelphia Mint, marks both the dawn of a new century and the continuation of one of America's most enduring coinage series. Designed by George T. Morgan and first issued in 1878, the series reflected the nation's expansive growth and the political and economic influence of the silver mining industry. Struck in 90% silver and 10% copper, the 1900 issue features the familiar obverse portrait of Liberty, wearing a Phrygian cap adorned with cotton and wheat—symbols of agricultural unity and republican liberty. The reverse depicts a bold eagle clutching arrows and an olive branch, encircled by the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, ONE DOLLAR, and IN GOD WE TRUST. Coins from Philadelphia bear no mintmark, distinguishing them from branch mint issues of the same year. The Philadelphia Mint produced over 8.8 million Morgan dollars in 1900. Many were stored in vaults and later released into circulation during the 20th century, resulting in a wide range of conditions seen in surviving examples. While circulated pieces are common, uncirculated coins with minimal bag marks and strong luster remain highly collectible. Well-struck specimens with original surfaces can command significant premiums, particularly in grades of MS-64 and above. The 1900 Morgan dollar holds additional appeal for collectors due to its transitional status—representing both the end of a century defined by industrial and territorial expansion, and the beginning of a new era in American monetary history. As such, it remains a key date for type collectors and series specialists alike.
