Description
United States 1896 “P” Morgan Silver Dollar – Philadelphia Mint The 1896 Morgan Silver Dollar is a product of the Philadelphia Mint, struck during the final decade of large-scale silver dollar coinage in the United States. Designed by George T. Morgan and first issued in 1878, the Morgan dollar became an enduring symbol of America’s westward expansion, industrial growth, and monetary politics of the late 19th century. The 1896 issue, minted without a mintmark, reflects the peak of silver dollar production in the post-Panic of 1893 economic recovery period. The obverse features a left-facing profile of Lady Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap crowned with cotton and wheat, representing both liberty and agricultural unity between North and South. The reverse displays a heraldic eagle with outstretched wings clutching arrows and an olive branch, framed by the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, ONE DOLLAR, and the motto IN GOD WE TRUST above the eagle’s head. Philadelphia struck over 9.9 million Morgan dollars in 1896, making this issue relatively common in circulated grades. However, uncirculated specimens, particularly those with strong luster and clean surfaces, remain highly desirable among collectors. Coins with minimal contact marks and sharp strikes often receive high numismatic premiums, particularly in MS-65 and higher grades. As with all Morgan dollars, the 1896 Philadelphia issue embodies the tensions of the silver standard debate, representing a period when U.S. monetary policy, western mining interests, and national identity converged in one of the most iconic coinage series in American history.
