Description
United States 1889 “P” Morgan Silver Dollar – Philadelphia Mint The 1889 Morgan Silver Dollar, struck at the Philadelphia Mint, is a classic mid-series issue of one of America's most iconic coin designs. Created by U.S. Mint engraver George T. Morgan, the coin reflects the monetary and political climate of the late 19th century, especially the ongoing national debate over the silver standard and bimetallism. The obverse features the profile of Lady Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap, adorned with wheat and cotton to symbolize the unity of North and South. The reverse depicts a powerful American eagle with outstretched wings, grasping arrows and an olive branch, framed by the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, ONE DOLLAR, and IN GOD WE TRUST. As with all coins from the Philadelphia Mint, the 1889 Morgan dollar carries no mintmark. In total, over 21.7 million Morgan dollars were struck in Philadelphia in 1889, making it one of the more plentiful issues in the series. While circulated examples are common, high-grade uncirculated pieces—particularly those with full luster and sharp detail—remain in steady collector demand. This date is especially notable in comparison to its Carson City counterpart from the same year, which is one of the rarest in the Morgan series. The 1889 Morgan dollar represents the height of U.S. silver dollar production following the Bland-Allison Act and is emblematic of a period when silver politics, western mining interests, and the growth of American identity converged in coinage. It remains a foundational date for both type collectors and series specialists. At VDG Militaria, we are dedicated to providing collectors with an exceptional selection of original military antiques.
