Description
This four-place US medal bar spans World War II and the early Cold War, reflecting a veteran’s service in both the Pacific Theater and the Korean Peninsula under United Nations command. The American Campaign Medal, authorized by Executive Order 9265 in 1942, was awarded to service members who operated within the American Theater between December 7, 1941, and March 2, 1946. Eligibility required service within the continental United States for one year or outside the US but within the theater boundaries for at least 30 consecutive days. Its obverse features a B-24 bomber, a Navy cruiser, and a submarine—symbolizing the US defense of its coasts against Axis threats during World War II. The China Service Medal, established by the Department of the Navy in 1942 and retroactively applicable to service beginning in 1937, was awarded in two distinct periods: July 7, 1937, to September 7, 1939, and September 2, 1945, to April 1, 1957. The medal was awarded to Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard personnel who served onshore or aboard vessels in China and its surrounding waters. During the postwar years, US forces supported the Nationalist Chinese government and safeguarded American interests during the Chinese Civil War and early Cold War. The obverse displays a traditional Chinese junk under sail, representing the theater of operations. The World War II Victory Medal, established in 1945, was issued to all members of the United States Armed Forces who served honorably between December 7, 1941, and December 31, 1946. It is one of the most widely issued US military medals and was intended as a symbol of national gratitude for participation in the greatest military mobilization in American history. The obverse features the figure of Liberty holding a broken sword and standing over a war helmet—symbolizing victory over tyranny. The final medal in this set is the United Nations Service Medal for Korea, established in 1951 by the United Nations and awarded to personnel who served under UN Command during the Korean War between June 27, 1950, and July 27, 1954. This medal is distinguished by the inclusion of the suspension bar reading “KOREA,” denoting the operational theater. It was awarded to members of the US and allied forces who participated in collective efforts to repel Communist aggression in Korea. The obverse features the official emblem of the United Nations surrounded by a laurel wreath, while the reverse bears the inscription: “For Service in Defence of the Principles of the Charter of the United Nations.” This medal bar represents a unique arc of service across two continents and two major conflicts—World War II and the Korean War—demonstrating a career that bridged the transition from global warfare to Cold War intervention. Each medal tells part of a larger story of American commitment during the defining military events of the mid-20th century.
