Description
This is an original Württemberg Kriegerverein Brettheim veterans’ badge, dating to the late Imperial German or early Weimar period. The badge features a finely struck gilt-finished crowned shield bearing the intertwined royal cypher of King Wilhelm II of Württemberg, flanked by ornate scrollwork and surmounted by a detailed royal crown. The shield is supported by stylized lion heads on each side, a traditional Württemberg heraldic motif. Attached to the badge is the original silk ribbon in the Imperial German national colors of black, white, and red, with the central yellow field denoting Württemberg’s state colors. The ribbon is printed with the inscription Krieger-Verein Brettheim (Brettheim Veterans’ Association) on one side, and Württemberg Kriegerbund (Württemberg Veterans’ League) on the other. Both inscriptions are in period Gothic script, characteristic of veterans’ insignia from the early 20th century. The reverse retains the original pin-back fitting. Kriegervereine were local veterans’ associations formed across Germany during the 19th and early 20th centuries, originally established to provide camaraderie, mutual aid, and commemorative activities for veterans of the Napoleonic, Austro-Prussian, and Franco-Prussian Wars. By the Imperial era, these groups played a central role in preserving military traditions, organizing memorial events, and supporting widows and orphans of fallen comrades. The Württemberg Kriegerbund served as the umbrella organization for all Württemberg veterans’ associations, maintaining strong ties to the monarchy and fostering loyalty to both state and Kaiser. Brettheim, a village in the state of Württemberg, contributed its share of soldiers during the Imperial period and the First World War. The veterans’ association there would have worn these badges at commemorative parades, memorial ceremonies, and official gatherings, often accompanied by sashes, banners, and other regalia.
