Description
This is an original Deutsches Feld-Ehrenzeichen, more widely known by collectors and veterans alike as the Hamburg Cross (Hamburgkreuz). Manufactured in Hamburg and clearly marked on the reverse with “Deutsches Feld-Ehrenzeichen – Hamburg 11”, this privately instituted badge was created during the 1920s to commemorate service in the First World War. It was not an official Reich decoration, but it was widely distributed to and proudly worn by former soldiers of the Imperial German Army, particularly among regional veteran associations and reunion groups (Kriegsvereine).

The design features a multi-rayed starburst with white enamel-tipped arms in the form of a Maltese cross, flanked by two gilt swords crossing behind a central oval medallion. The obverse medallion depicts a German stormtrooper in full marching kit—helmeted, rifle slung, and advancing forward—representing the enduring martial spirit of the WW1 infantryman. The reverse medallion shows the same soldier grappling a symbolic foe, often interpreted as a representation of Germany's enemies during the war.

The reverse bears the engraved maker information and is stamped “GES. GESCH.” (indicating legal protection under German design law), further authenticating this as a period original. Though unofficial, this cross became a popular symbol of remembrance and pride for many WW1 veterans, especially those in northern Germany. It was often worn at veterans' gatherings, parades, and in some cases, even on civilian clothing.

The Hamburgkreuz occupies a unique place in German military memorabilia—blending the line between official state recognition and grassroots veteran commemoration. Its distribution across Hamburg and its surrounding regions reflects the powerful regional memory of the First World War in Weimar-era Germany, long before the political transformations of the 1930s.
