Description
The 82nd Airborne Division earned a legendary reputation in World War II as one of the first U.S. Army airborne units to see combat. Originally formed in 1917 during World War I, the division was reactivated in 1942 and converted into an airborne unit. As the first division-sized airborne force in the U.S. military, the 82nd played a crucial role in multiple major campaigns across Europe. After intensive training, the 82nd saw its first combat action during the invasion of Sicily in July 1943 (Operation Husky), where it conducted the first U.S. regimental-sized combat parachute assault. The division went on to participate in the invasion of mainland Italy at Salerno and fought in the brutal mountain campaign near Naples. In June 1944, the 82nd parachuted into Normandy as part of the D-Day invasion (Operation Neptune), securing key causeways and disrupting German reinforcements behind Utah Beach. The division fought in hedgerow country near Sainte-Mère-Église and along the Merderet River, sustaining heavy casualties while holding critical terrain. Later in 1944, the 82nd participated in Operation Market Garden, jumping into the Netherlands to capture bridges along a narrow corridor leading to the Rhine. Despite initial successes, the operation stalled, and the division held defensive positions near Nijmegen for several weeks. In December 1944, the 82nd Airborne was rushed to the Ardennes to counter the German offensive during the Battle of the Bulge. Fighting in freezing conditions around Werbomont and Cheneux, the division helped blunt the German advance and stabilize the Allied line. By war’s end, the 82nd had earned four combat jumps and fought across Sicily, Italy, France, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany. It became known as “America’s Guard of Honor,” participating in the postwar occupation of Berlin. The division’s wartime accomplishments set the standard for U.S. airborne forces and established a legacy of valor that continues to this day.
