Description
WW2 British Army Princess Louise’s (Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders) Dragoon Guards Brass Cap Badge This original brass cap badge represents the Princess Louise’s Dragoon Guards, a Canadian armoured regiment with deep roots in cavalry tradition. The design features the intertwined royal cypher "PLDG" surmounted by a crown, signifying the unit’s Royal association and honouring Princess Louise, the regiment’s namesake. The Princess Louise’s Dragoon Guards trace their lineage to the 4th Hussars of Canada, with formal designation changes leading to the PLDG title in 1936. During the Second World War, the regiment mobilised as part of the 4th Canadian Armoured Division, serving with distinction in Northwest Europe from 1944 to 1945. They participated in critical operations during the push through France, Belgium, and the Netherlands, supporting infantry advances and engaging German forces in reconnaissance and armoured warfare roles. Badges such as this were worn on the service dress cap and later on the beret, serving not only as a means of regimental identification but also as a proud emblem of service. The brass construction reflects wartime Canadian manufacturing standards, with lug fittings on the reverse for attachment. Today, the Princess Louise’s Dragoon Guards maintain their heritage as a Reserve armoured reconnaissance regiment of the Canadian Army, carrying forward the legacy of their wartime service. This badge stands as a tangible link to the regiment’s role in the liberation of Western Europe and its long-standing cavalry traditions.
