The M-1941 field jacket—commonly referred to as the M41—was the standard issue field jacket for US Army personnel during the early years of World War II. Developed to replace earlier wool overcoats and cumbersome pullover sweaters, the M41 was designed to provide soldiers with a lightweight, practical outer layer that could be worn over wool service uniforms and layered in colder environments. Constructed with a cotton poplin outer shell and a wool flannel lining, the M41 offered basic wind and water resistance. It featured a front zipper with buttoned storm flap, two slash pockets, button-adjustable cuffs, and a bi-swing back for increased mobility. Though initially issued to all arms of the Army, the jacket was also seen among some Marine Corps units and was worn in every major theater of the war—from the beaches of Normandy to the jungles of the Pacific. Despite its iconic look, the M41 was quickly found to be inadequate for prolonged exposure to wet or cold conditions. Its olive drab shade No. 3 faded easily, and the thin lining offered little warmth. By late 1943, it began to be phased out in favor of the improved M43 field jacket, though M41s remained in use throughout the war by rear-echelon troops and even front-line units due to supply constraints and soldier preference for its comfortable, tailored fit. The M41 field jacket became an enduring symbol of the American soldier in World War II, immortalized in countless wartime photographs and newsreels. Its simple yet distinctive design makes it one of the most recognizable pieces of US military uniform from the period.
