Description
This is a rare wartime-produced plastic Distinctive Unit Insignia (DUI) for the 310th Infantry Regiment of the US Army, manufactured by Whitehead & Hoag under the wartime economy restrictions that called for non-metallic alternatives to conserve critical materials. This example features the regimental motto "Allons Mes Enfants" ("Let's go, my children") on a scroll below the shield, and is constructed of laminated plastic over a metal pin-back base—a method typical of Whitehead & Hoag's 1940s production. The shield is divided diagonally by a lightning bolt, symbolizing striking power and rapid movement, with a tree representing the unit’s early formation and service in the wooded battlefields of Europe. The cross represents the regiment’s operations in France and connection to the French theater of operations. The 310th Infantry Regiment was part of the 78th Infantry Division, nicknamed the "Lightning Division." During World War II, the 310th played a crucial role in several major campaigns: -
Battle of the Hürtgen Forest (Nov–Dec 1944): One of the bloodiest battles fought by US forces in Europe, where the 310th advanced through dense, heavily defended forest terrain in western Germany under brutal winter conditions.
-
Battle of the Bulge (Dec 1944–Jan 1945): The 310th was committed to defensive positions during the German Ardennes offensive, later transitioning to counteroffensive operations.
-
Capture of the Ludendorff Bridge at Remagen (March 1945): Elements of the 78th Division, including the 310th, supported operations that secured and expanded the bridgehead across the Rhine—accelerating the Allied push into central Germany.
-
Advance into the Ruhr Pocket and final operations in central Germany during April 1945, contributing to the encirclement and collapse of German forces in the industrial heartland of the Reich.
This theater-made DUI is both a rare example of wartime ingenuity and a direct connection to one of the most storied infantry regiments of World War II. The plastic variation, with its distinctive faded patina and age-toned coloration, is highly sought after by collectors of WW2 insignia and regimental memorabilia.
