WWII Era US Army 82nd Airborne Division 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment Oval

This is an original WWII-era Airborne background trimming, or “oval,” worn by paratroopers of the famed 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, part of the 82nd Airborne Division. This example features the characteristic red, white, and blue threading consistent with WWII manufacturing, with the correct mesh backing pattern and WWII-era construction methods. These ovals were worn behind the Parachutist Badge on the service coat or dress uniform to signify both jump qualification and regimental affiliation.

The 504th PIR was activated in May 1942 and quickly became one of the most combat-hardened and celebrated airborne units of the Second World War. After early operations in North Africa and Sicily with the 82nd Airborne, the 504th fought in the brutal battles of Salerno and Anzio in Italy. So fierce was their reputation at Anzio that the regiment earned the nickname “Devils in Baggy Pants,” taken from a line in a captured German officer’s diary.

Although the regiment missed the Normandy jump due to heavy losses in Italy, the 504th returned to action in Operation Market Garden, parachuting into the Netherlands and fighting to secure key bridges and routes. The regiment also played a key defensive role in the Battle of the Bulge, particularly around the northern shoulder near Trois-Ponts and Cheneux. Throughout the war, the 504th PIR was awarded multiple Presidential Unit Citations and produced countless decorated soldiers for gallantry in airborne combat.
