The 504th PIR was activated in 1942 and quickly distinguished itself as one of the most battle-hardened units of the war. The regiment participated in nearly every major Allied airborne operation in the European Theater, including the invasion of Sicily (Operation Husky), Salerno, Anzio, and later Operation Market Garden in the Netherlands. The 504th earned the nickname “Devils in Baggy Pants,” taken from a German officer’s diary describing the fierce resistance faced in Italy. The unit was renowned for its tenacity, esprit de corps, and extraordinary bravery under fire.
