This original Rhodesian Air Force officer’s visor cap dates from the later years of the Rhodesian Bush War, and is marked internally to “Edmond Mack,” likely a serving officer during the final decade of the white-minority government’s rule. The cap features the classic air force blue wool crown and band with a black wool center band, leather chinstrap, and patent leather visor, exhibiting typical wartime use and wear. The gold bullion Rhodesian Air Force cap badge is prominently affixed to the front and features the lion and tusk over wings, with the scroll marked “RHODESIA.”
Inside the cap is a clear celluloid liner with the stamp of Botswana Cap & Helmet Mfrs, Lobatse, a known supplier of headgear to both the Rhodesian and later Zimbabwean forces. The leather sweatband bears the hand-inscribed name “Edmond Mack” and the number “82732,” likely a service or identification number.
This visor cap is a scarce and authentic artifact from the Rhodesian Air Force, which played a critical role in the Bush War (1964–1979). Operating under intense constraints due to international sanctions, the RRAF developed some of the most innovative counter-insurgency air strategies of the Cold War era, using aircraft like the Hunter, Canberra, and Alouette III in strike and support roles. Pilots and ground crews alike were known for their professionalism and adaptability in one of the most politically isolated conflicts of the 20th century.
This example captures the lived experience of that era—a personal item once worn by an individual in one of history’s most controversial and militarily unique conflicts. A rare and evocative piece of southern African military aviation history.
